Our History

Yturri Rose traces its history back to Anthony “Tony” Yturri opening his practice in 1936. The son of Basque immigrants, Mr. Yturri graduated that year from the University of Oregon. He is considered the first Basque American to graduate from law school. In recognition of his high achievement, Mr. Yturri was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif.

During World War II, Mr. Yturri served in the U.S. Army’s Counter Intelligence Branch and as a Judge Advocate General, attaining the rank of Captain.

Mr. Yturri was elected to the Oregon State Senate in 1956 and served as elected minority leader for several sessions. He quickly became a popular and influential figure in the state assembly and served on the Ways and Means Committee and as Chair of the Judiciary and Roads and Highway Committee. He also led a significant revision to the Oregon criminal code and chaired the committee that wrote the Oregon Beach Bill, which was passed in 1967. Mr. Yturri retired from the legislature in 1972, and he served as the Chair of the Oregon Transportation Commission from 1969 to 1972.

In the 1960s, Mr. Yturri partnered with Baker City attorney Gene Rose to form the law firm Yturri Rose, LLP. Gene Rose joined the firm in 1969 to work on public utility law. He was well known for his work expanding the infrastructure in the region as well as his involvement in little league baseball. He retired in the 1990s. Both men shared a commitment to excellence, ethics, and community. These values live on today in the DNA of Yturri Rose.

Outside of the practice of law, Mr. Yturri was dedicated to helping the Basque community integrate into American society and culture. He conducted many classes to help young Basque men become active U.S. citizens and worked to explain Basque culture to Oregonians. He collaborated with University of Oregon Professor Luther Cressmanin to write a chapter in History and Culture of Basques in the Pacific Northwest (1992).

In his later years, Mr. Yturri returned to his Ontario, Oregon law practice until his death in 1999 at the age of eighty-four.
